Putting the "October" in "Oktoberfest"

This evening the University of Oregon German community hosted a little Oktoberfest event. Of course there were Bretzel, Wurst, and (root) beer. A whole variety of people including professors, teaching assistants, former students, current students, people from my hall, and people who used to live in my hall all showed up to partake in the merriment.

Willkommen auf dem Oktoberfest!
It was fun getting to speak German with professors and other students. One of my coworkers from Waldsee even made an appearance and we got the chance to catch up a bit, which was great. I'm excited to become more involved in the UO German community as the year progresses. Oktoberfest took place in the Global Scholars Hall, which has a great facilities, including a test kitchen that we were able to use for the event.

Sco Ducks! UO pride whether in the Mississippi River during Waldsee orientation or Global Scholars Hall test kitchen for Oktoberfest.
The Global Scholars Hall is wonderful, not only because of the modern accommodations, but also the community (at least in my hall) is very friendly, studious and involved. There is a pretty wide variety of people in the hall-- some grew up fifteen minutes away from campus, others hail from Vermont, Colorado, or Georgia, non-traditional students, a mix of majors, Honors College students and non-Honors College, and various world views are represented throughout the hall. From my experience thus far, though, all of the people around me are good neighbors.

All in all, college life is going well. It's busy! People always say before you come here that the time will fly by. Well, it is! Already! What with Marching Band, classes, Toastmasters, getting to know the German community, new friends, new places to explore, events both planned and spontaneous, there's a lot going on to make the time go by in a rush. I guess I just have to enjoy it while it lasts and make the most of it all. But for now, it's time to study!
