Marching Into College

Well, summer has come and gone and the school year is upon us. The past two weeks have consisted of regaining my energy post-Waldsee, reuniting with family in California after over a year apart, playing with puppies, building furniture, sorting through very-retro cassette tapes, hiking on the Oregon coast, and a bit of packing for college.

Pup-splosion! Hanging with three of my favorite pups.
Last week I was in California visiting family and helping my grandma move to a smaller place. It was great getting to catch up with people I hadn't seen since June 2014 or even longer. One highlight was visiting two of my aunts who have been involved with an organization that raises dogs to assist people with disabilities. They currently have a house full of adorable labrador puppies. It was overwhelmingly cute and fuzzy!

A Kodak moment with Oma.
I also enjoyed spending time with my grandmother and helping her get settled into her new place. She and I have been pen-pals since I was a very little girl. Whenever we travel (which for us both is quite often) we send the other a postcard from the destination. Even when we're at home living our daily lives we've written one another regularly. Except for my time in Aachen, both of our addresses have remained the same the entirety of our pen-pal-ship. Her address was probably the second one I learned after my own. It seems somehow fitting that as I'm receiving my new address, she is too.

Double with a sink and room to spare!
And speaking of new residences, I moved into my dorm room at the University of Oregon for the 2015-16 school year yesterday. My roommate arrives in a few days, but since I'm doing Marching Band I'm here a bit earlier than everyone else. Thankfully the room is very new, clean, and spacious. The beds are so high up, though, I have to practically pole vault to get into it. Still, that means lots of storage space under it, I guess! Storage space for the new trumpet I got this morning from the Oregon Marching Band!

They said my wardrobe would be taken over by Duck gear...
Marching Band is off to a great start. I've met some friendly and interesting people so far and the trumpets seem like a pretty high-energy group, which I'm looking forward to. There are 35 or so of us just in one section. The band as a whole has a total of 250 or more members. We checked out our UO-approved instruments this morning, got uniforms (brought to us by Nike), auditioned this afternoon for the section leaders, have a marching refresher course soon, and this evening we're all getting together for a band meeting.

Say hello to my new home at the UO!
Classes start in two weeks, but before then I'll have had two weeks of band camp, marched in two home football games (one against Georgia State, the other Utah), played for one or two pep rallies, and gotten to know the people I'll be living with for the next few months. College seems pretty great so far! Go Ducks!
