Welcome to D.C.... Or Silver Spring!

Currently the 50 CBYX students from my region, which includes northern California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota (but there aren’t any students from there this year), and Nevada are all chilling in the Silver Spring Hampton Inn. Today was unexpectedly spontaneous and fun.

First off, I've gotten to meet pretty much everyone here. Seattle-Tacoma, Sacramento, and the Portland metro area seem to be places with the most CBYXers. We had a few hours of down time so I went out to explore Silver Spring a bit along with Joseph, who went to South with me, a guy from Seattle, another guy from Oregon, a guy from Spokane, and a girl from Idaho Falls. After getting a bite to eat we wondered around and finally found this nice, little city park.

There were two guys passing a soccer ball around and we joked about joining them, then decided to ask. It turns out they were from Ireland and super friendly. So we played a bit of four-on-four, which was a great little pre-Germany thing to do. Only thing I can say about playing soccer in DC-- humidity! After 15 minutes we were all a bit sticky. Or a lot.

Once we got back to the Hampton Inn and a quick shower, there was a group pizza meeting. It was a little long, especially after a day full of traveling, but it did have some "get to know you" games which were nice. After the meeting, a few of us went out to get some Ben and Jerry's and walk around. Despite the humidity and heat during the day, the nights feel amazing! Warm enough to be outside in shorts and a tank top.

Anyway tomorrow we get to meet our State Representatives and Senators. Well actually the Reps and Senators "people" because everyone's on break. We also get to check out the Capitol and some of the Smithsonian. Oh, as a side note, today was President Obama's birthday. Too bad I wasn't invited to the party... It's just a hop away!
